Departmentalizing bases are theoretically discussed. Resource-oriented bases,
result-oriented bases, and process-oriented bases, as well as rules to join,
assign, and divide activities are dealt with. Departmentalization has been carried
out through thirteen bases, which are the foundation for executives’ decisions in
regard to design and re- design occupations or organs within each organizational
level. Literature on administration has registered these bases according to their
application; however, a systematized explanation is still a want. To this end, the
author proposes an explanation based on a systemic approach of organizational
systems. Concerning resources-oriented bases, a simple numerical basis and
another involving executor’s qualifi cation, team, and working time are explained.
As to result-oriented bases, those implying objective, product, project, object,
territory, client and marketing channels are included. Finally, in relation to processoriented
bases, the ones dealing with function and technology are discussed.
All these bases are supplemented with seven rules to join activities, fi ve rules to
assign them, and fi ve more rules to divide them. This study is recommended in
teaching the theoretical and methodological principles of organizational systems
design, and also in carrying out the practical role played by government offi cials
and technicians in labor organization.
