Abstract

Trends on development of environmental thought are mapped. This development has resulted in an attitude change, a position deepening, and new knowledge generation which has been translated into a new paradigm for such a development based on different perspectives and challenges. Since the end of World War II up to the present time, six stages have been identified, i.e., sensibility and denouncement, environmental education, environmental ethics and management, environmental culture, a paradigm for sustainable development, and a culture of prevention. A theoretical construct to interpret the knowledge-ethics-management triad conforming a culture of prevention is discussed.
