Empirical Determination of Competences for Sustainable Tourism

The purpose of this study was to determine suitable scales to measure generic and specific competences in managers and employees involved into local tourist industry so their performance could be attuned to a sustainability model. The experts method was applied. A statistical test measuring scales reliability and validity was performed. A sample comprising 92 managers and 154 employees out of 25 tourist organization from Viñales locality in Pinar del Río province, Cuba, was drawn. Crombach's alpha coefficient was used in evaluating reliability, while a factorial analysis was performed in assessing validity. Findings regarding generic competences showed that both managers and employees required six of them; in turn, manag ers required seven specific competences, but employees only five to attain tourism sustainability.
