      Abstract

A theoretical study on historical evolution, omissions, errors, outcomes, contributions, opportunities, and challenges regarding process reengineering was carried out. Relevance of this study was determined by reviewing the Cuban economic model and identifying particular aspects of this managerial technique domestic implementation. The importance of well-designed processes in achieving organizational success was revealed by analyzing the newly worked-out organizational patterns. Process reengineering —as a managerial tool to redesign key processes— increases efficiency, efficacy, and productivity. Although Cuban socialist project excludes an orthodox and dehumanized process reengineering and, consequently, its social cost and unemployment sequelae, it must be applied to some outstanding processes within socialist state enterprises in order to accomplish a new efficiency perception. Managerial tools can contribute to the strengthening, sustainability, and efficiency of the new Cuban economic model based on a higher entrepreneurial self-government.
