Abstract

Based on a practical experience carried out at Planta Mecánica Factory from Camagüey, Cuba, the role played by cleaner production techniques in designing an environmental management system for industries is dealt with. Procedures were supported by a generic method for cleaner productions combined with performance evaluation through several indicators. Measures suggested can reduce toxic salts emissions by 25 % equivalent to 7 054,00/ year decrease due to chemicals consumption in the area of thermal treatment. This area consumes 10 % of the overall chemical reagents  and  generates  18 %  of  dangerous  chemical  wastes.  Only  organizational measures  alone  can  drop  production  costs  by  more  than  18 %.  Besides,  energy consumption can be reduced by 15 % in the residual treatment plant. In a year, just by applying 28 % of the proposals, service costs of water treatment dropped to 4,5 % while energy consumption dropped to 9 %.
