Abstract

An analytical study carried out in Guantanamo province, Cuba, on sugarcane industry reconversion process before and after its completion made possible to identify the leading experiences from its application and how profitable it would have been from a local perspective. The socio-economic impact of this process upon the province´s sugarcane agrindustry was assessed. Findings indicated that boht sugarcane industrial reconversion and local economic development depend on perfectibility of conventional development models and their adaptation to local conditions. Therefore, an evaluation of the industry reconversion impact on different communities should take into account sustainability principles (economic, enviromental, and social dimensions).
